Team Up Missouri Intervention Action Plan

Name of Intervention: Tailored Counseling and Targeted Mailings to Increase Breast and Cervical Screening Among Rarely and Never Screened Missouri Women

Goal:
The goal of this evidence based intervention project is to reach over 1000 women through targeted mailings and tailored telephone counseling to promote breast and cervical cancer screening.

Target Audience:
The audience of interest is women ages 40 to 64 who are rarely or never screened for breast and cervical cancer, with an emphasis on minority women. American Cancer Society, Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services Show Me Healthy Women and Comprehensive Cancer Control programs, Missouri Department of Social Services, and the University of Missouri Extension are involved in the project.

The Team Up Missouri will 1) provide tailored telephone counseling and targeted mailings to Boone and Cole counties, 2) provide targeted mailings to Cape Girardeau and Buchanan counties, and 3) compare results with two comparative counties who did not receive either arm of the intervention (Usual Care).

Expected Outcome:
It is expected that the evaluation will demonstrate the impact of tailored telephone counseling and targeted mailings in promoting breast and cervical cancer screening to Missouri's at-risk women. It is anticipated that this intervention will result in an increase number of women scheduled for breast and/or cervical cancer screening appointment.

Intervention Model:
The Tailored Telephone Counseling and Mailings to Increase Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Among Rarely and Never Screened Missouri Women is based on the research-tested intervention, Breast Cancer Screening Among non-Adherent Women. The chosen intervention is designed to address barriers to breast cancer screening through targeted mailings and tailored telephone counseling. Missouri plans to adapt this evidence-based program and incorporate cervical cancer screening promotion.
